A “Boy Who Cried Wolf Scenario”: Behind The Scenes of Hill House Fire Alarms

On the night of September 30th, Hill House reminded campus why it holds an infamous reputation among the student body. A series of repeated fire alarms—some of which turned out to be false—ruined everyone’s chance at a good night’s sleep. Now that they have caught up on their beauty rest, however, students are ready to give their thoughts on their home’s unreliable emergency system.

When Sustainability Takes a Backseat

In the bowels of the campus operations office, past the iconic purple door and up two flights of creaky stairs, sits the office of Maureen ‘Mo’ Gallagher, a space packed to the brim with reusable bags, papers, notes, and spreadsheets of all means and uses. Everyone on campus knows her name; for all Sarah Lawrence College (SLC) students, her name pops up in email after email, a kind of disembodied voice that answers all kinds of campus operations questions. On campus, she slips by the student body easily, often in a baseball hat and a taupe bomber jacket; she sees all. She sits on the board of directors as the sustainability chair, oversees all campus clean-up teams, is the head of campus operations, and she does it all efficiently and bluntly, looking earnestly over her large wire-rimmed glasses.

A Two-Time Transfer’s Testimony: An Interview With a Hampshire College Transfer

Before last spring, a Hampshire College student’s worst nightmare was letting a University of Massachusetts (UMASS) Minuteman get the better of them. For Ethan Gordon, at the time a Junior at the late establishment, this was certainly the case: “Of course we were constantly joking about when Hampshire was going to close, but the second a UMASS student said something, I’d clap back.” One email sent out April 14th changed that forever, and declared to the school that Gordon and his friends bonded over defending closed. It condemned the students to something else, too: the decision to give up or transfer.

“Bates is the Place”: An Interview With Luis Fuentes

As many Sarah Lawrence students know, if you find yourself craving a late night or a pre-eight o’clock snack, one of the tastiest places to go is the pizza counter nestled in the back of Bates Dining Hall. Luis Fuentes, an experienced food serviceman and long-time employee of the college, would strongly agree, but what he would not admit is that the key to the pizza counter’s glow lies in his precision.

Lost Debauched Traditions of SLC: Where Did They Go?

Sarah Lawrence College (SLC) students know that parties are few and far between here. What many may not know is that we used to have a rich culture of on-campus drinking and partying. Beer used to be served at an on campus pub, and there was a night where being a drunk lesbian was specifically encouraged. It sounds like a fantasy, a Sarah Lawrence of endless possibilities. How did we lose these sacred traditions?

The Kids Can’t Read and the College Students Don’t Want To

The COVID-19 pandemic hit the world hard and classrooms even harder. In the height of panic, teachers and school administration worked with what they had for the students' best interest. Proms were canceled and elementary schoolers learned multiplication on Zoom. Pivots were made to try and compensate for the shocks and concerns people were riddled with. Coming up on five years since the pandemic, we are starting to see the lasting effects in the classroom.

Fall Arrives at Sarah Lawrence

On Saturday, October 4, the Sarah Lawrence Activities Council (SLAC) hosted their annual Fall Festival, a charming celebration of the approaching season. In addition to pumpkin painting and lawn games, the club organized a caramel-apple making station, an array of seasonal refreshments including apple cider and hot chocolate and an ambient setting complete with music and decorations. The festival was held on Westlands’ North Lawn and was well attended by the student body.

A Students’ Guide to Employment on Campus

Studying at Sarah Lawrence can feel like a daunting task– with conference papers piling up, the 100-page readings and presentations you haven’t started. That some students voluntarily chose to take on a part-time job both on and off campus in addition to all that work may sound almost psychotic. The Phoenix spoke to some of the students who hold jobs on campus. What we found is many students  who said their jobs actually enhanced their academic experience.

DykeLike! An Interview with Jennifer Camper

As history starts to repeat itself, looking to the past – especially its political activists – becomes increasingly important. I was lucky enough to interview Jennifer Camper, a self-described, “ average half-Arab smart-ass dyke cartoonist”. Camper has been creating comics since the early 1980s about her experiences as a half-Lebanese American Lesbian, as well as the ever-changing political climate. Her most popular works include  Camper for Rude Girls and Dangerous Women, subGURLZ, or her contributions to numerous anthologies. Her cartoons are witty, candid, and utterly relevant, from the first release to the current day.

New Title IX Regulations Spark Confusion and Concern Across Sarah Lawrence

At the beginning of the whirlwind of days leading up to the 2024-25 school year at Sarah Lawrence College, first-year students crowded into a newly-familiar Barbara Walters Campus Center for their first foray into orientation week: Title IX training. Via a dense Powerpoint presentation given by Kristin Collado, Sarah Lawrence’s Title IX coordinator, freshmen were inundated with everything they need to know about Title IX—including the role of mandated reporters, definitions of sexual harassment, misconduct and discrimination, and student’s rights under Title IX. Similar presentations are administered to mandated reporters—which include faculty and staff, as well as student leaders like Residential Advisors (RAs) and Gryphon Guides.
